By definition, “classics” never go out of style, but their prominence can certainly ebb and flow. Right now, the traditional materials of woven cord and caning are surging—in both vintage and contemporary designs.

Leading this trend is the vintage seating designs of Danish designer Børge Mogensen, like his Asserbo Armchairs for Karl Andersson & Söner , Model 157 Dining Chairs for Søborg Møbelfabrik , and Model 5273 Bench and Sled Lounge for Fredericia.

This year, we saw numerous contemporary designers revisit the traditional process of caning, in both seating and tables. Standouts include Patricia Urquiola’s Piani Console Tables for Editions Milano, Elena Salmistraro’s Lisetta Lounge Chair for Bottega Intreccio, Kam Ce Kam’s Mera Chairs, Miguel Soeiro’s Bee Chairs for Porventura, Studio Andónde’s Low Ti Chairs for Kann Design, and Nayef Francis’s Weave Lamps.
