About this Museum

Founded in 1879, the Art Institute of Chicago is both a museum and a school for the fine and applied arts. Since the addition of the new Modern Wing by architect Renzo Piano in 2009, it has become the second largest art museum in the United States, behind the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

The Department of Architecture and Design features a collection 250,000 objects, from the pioneers of Modernism, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier, to today’s design stars, such as Hella Jongerius, Konstantin Grcic and Stefan Sagmeister.
