Kabuki Scene: a Revenge Story is a wonderful color xylograph on paper, realized by the Japanese master Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1798-1861) between 1846-1852. Japanese ideograms are printed on the lower left corner. In very good condition. This original print represents a scene from the Kabuki theatrical spectacle ''Shinrei Yaguchi no Watashi'' (The Yaguchi Ferry and the Magic Arrows). This very popular Japanese story talks about the spirit of a killed person who takes revenge on his death on the culprit, turning into a magic arrow. When the culprit, called Tonbee, arrived at the same place where Yoshioki was killed, an arrow falls from the sky piercing Tonbee. Thus the spirit of Yoshioki takes revenge.
