Julian Mayor

Born in England in 1976, artist-designer Julian Mayor graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from the University of Northumbria in 1998. He went on to earn his Master’s degree in Design Products from the Royal College of Arts in 2000. Between 2000 and 2002, he worked for the design consultancy IDEO as a product and interior designer in San Francisco and Palo Alto, California. In 2002, he returned to London and worked for a few U.K.-based design studios, including Pentagram. In 2003, Mayor worked on a table lamp and chandelier for British designer Tom Dixon. In 2003, he began teaching and lecturing on spatial design at London College of Communication. Mayor launched his own studio in 2004.

Mayor’s work combines high-tech design processes with craft-based techniques. All of his works are initially conceived on a computer, and then each piece is built by hand in his South Yorkshire workshop. His designs and art have been exhibited at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, Rossana Orlandi Gallery in Milan, FAT Galerie in Paris, and 21^st Twenty First in New York. Notable projects include his 2003 Impression Chair; Frame Sculptures from 2007 and 2008—a series of evolving, small wire sculptural studies—and a 2009 series of designs for Swarovski Crystal Palace.

Mayor lives and works in East London.
