About This Piece

Vintage Design

A combination commode forming a dressing table and writing desk in marquetry wood, after a design by Jean-François Leleu (1729-1807), in the Transition style. Beautiful gilt bronze ornamentation. This rectangular piece, whose top slides back to reveal a writing surface covered in tan leather, features two large side drawers that can slide forward. These drawers have lids, and the interiors are lined with beige damask fabric. The writing surface opens to reveal a dressing table with a mirror. The back of the piece is also inlaid. This multi-functional piece is in very good condition. 20th century. The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., owns an example of this piece dating from the 18th century.
